Windsurfing: Daymer bay Wind Direction: S Wind Stength: f5-6 Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Max Speed: Distance Covered:
I was staying at Widemouth Bay for 5 days & planned on sailing there,
but by the time the wind had picked up in the afternoon so had the waves,
watching from the car park on the hill the waves looked easily over mast
high & were breaking along way off shore although from up there it looked
like there was plenty of space between the waves & though very big it
looked kinda safe from up there,no surfers or other sailers were out only
the surf school in the shallows & these people looked like ants compared to
the waves off shore.
Down on the beach it was now blowing F6 & what looked like safe but big
from above now looked closed out with white water everywhere & mases of
water moving sideways towards the rocks & looked very scary (& with the
missus saying it looked huge & she wouldnt even dip a toe in) self
preservation kicked in & i bottled it,
so i opted for the safety of Daymer, but got there only 1 & half hrs
before high tide,so all the waves on the bar were now gone,But at least it
was windy & sunny. The 5.0 was a bit much at times but with only large chop
about it didnt matter really.Downwind runs were really fast especially
right in the bay where the water was glassy smooth.
Whilst sailing right over to the other side i thought i hadnt seen a
guy for a while that was out on a 4.7 north sail? then i spotted somone
waving, his UJ had broke & the only option was to swim upwind to the beach
on the opposite side of Daymer, which was still a long swim in choppy water
, so i offered to give him a tow which worked well untill i got into a wind
shadow about 50m from the beach, but at least it saved alot of swimming &
he was now safe.
Some waves started coming round the rocky point at Daymer side so
played about on these for a while but ending up by the cliff & in a wind
shadow aint much fun...
After a couple of hours sailing in good winds & sunshine called it day
looking forward to tomorrows forcast.
On returning to widemouth the waves coming in were very big, even
bigger than when i left, & on hindsight of the guy with the broken UJ i was
i glad i opted not to sail here!
